Gangster movies have all the things any dick-flick aficionado would enjoy: guns, violence, insane one-liners, and of course, the gorgeous girls.

So it wouldn’t be surprising that Gangster Squad, which opens nationwide today, will probably get a lot of attention from male moviegoers.

Set in 1949 crime-fueled Los Angeles, mob boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) terrorizes and controls the city with his malicious means and murderous henchmen. But when a team of rogue cops, led by the impervious Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and idealistic Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), form a squad of vigilantes who will stop at nothing to have the baddies swimming with the fishes, suddenly Mickey's reign of terror doesn't seem like a sure thing. What doesn’t help is that Wooters beds and falls for the mobster’s ladylove Grace (crush ng bayan Emma Stone), creating more complexities for their mission.

It has the elements needed for a successful gangster movie (blood, blazing guns, and a bitchin’ hot redhead). Despite some problems with the movie’s character development and script, it still makes for a highly entertaining watch. With high-octane stylized action sequences and visually stunning production design, the movie makes up (well, at least for the less-jaded critics) for its shortcomings.

Here we present seven almost-perfect gangster flicks–plus the quotes and moves– that will remind you that while living the criminal life may seem cool, someone is bound to get a bullet through the head in the end. Chime in below for those you think we’ve missed.
