Halloween is coming for us again, and yes, we’re talking about the new Michael Myers movie that hits theaters next month. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role as Laurie Strode, the sole survivor of knife-wielding villain’s 1978 killing spree, and the badass that vows to end Michael once and for all after 40 fuckin’ years. That’s an awfully long time to hold a grudge.
And while we can’t wait to see some fresh blood and gore on the silver screen after a Toronto Film Festival exclusive release garnered the movie rave reviews, we can certainly take a look back at some of the toughest, and frankly, most beautiful badass women that have gone toe-to-toe against some seriously sick maniacs.
Sidney Prescott - Scream (1996)
Sidney (portrayed by Neve Campbell) may look like the typical girl next door--sweet, pure, and innocent--but boy Ghostface made a grave (pun intended) mistake by judging this cute book by its cover. Sidney is as smart, or even smarter than the people trying to kill her. You can’t just creep this chick out with some plastic ghost mask.
Clarice Starling - Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Portrayed by Jodie Foster, Clarice is a sly FBI agent who is forced to consult with the brilliant, but psychotic, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In their infamous cat-and-mouse game, Hannibal seems to be playing with Clarice, but the latter always finds a way to keep up with the flesh-eating criminal.
Julie James - I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Julie James, one of the teenagers who covers up the time they accidentally killed a fisherman one summer night. Her life is turned upside down when someone starts sending her letters about knowing what they did that summer. Julie was unfazed, found the man who’s been sending her letters, killed him, and moved in with his boyfriend into their new home.
Erin - You're Next (2011)
Erin (portrayed by Sharni Vinson) is that no-nonsense protagonist who’s, even if outgunned and outmatched, never outwitted. The way she thinks of trapping the on-the-loose killer is just beyond satisfying. For once, we got a protagonist who’s actively trying to survive by making the right choices (i.e. not running towards the disturbing noise).
Mia Allen - Evil Dead (2013)
Jane Levy portrays Mia Allen, our protagonist who gets in conflict with her inner (and actual) demons throughout the movie, ending the actual ones with a reverse Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When she finally says, "Feast on this, motherfucker," we couldn't help but cheer her on. She was the only one who survived, of course, because only badasses deserve to live. Kill or be killed.
Taylor Gentry - Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
The biggest twist in this mockumentary of horror slasher flicks is that (SPOILER ALERT!) Taylor (played by Angela Goethals) is the virgin survivor girl. And when she realizes this, she faces her ‘destiny’ and defeats Leslie by crushing his head in the Apple Press and burning down the shed he died in.
Maddie Young - Hush (2016)
Maddie (portrayed by Kate Siegel) is deaf and mute, so she can’t scream when a mysterious masked killer invades her home. What follows is an intense hide-and-seek chase between the two, with Maddie eventually coming out on top with the twisted (you’ll get it if you watch the movie) killing of the Man. She’s like Daredevil, heightened senses and all but instead of blind, she’s deaf and mute.
