We know what you’re thinking: Why sabotage a perfectly good story? Jumanji, after all, was one of the most memorbale family-friendly films from the '90s.
Before you cross it out of your list of movies to watch this weekend, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a completely different story on its own, creating an entirely different world to get lost in. There’s some '90s reference in the movie, but only to emphasize that the story has totally moved on from that decade.
It’s packed with adventure, comedy, and teenage awkwardness, making it an exemplary coming-of-age film for this generation.
But that doesn’t mean adults can’t have a blast watching it. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is the RPG disk you wish you could pop in your game console. Here, the teen characters take on avatars who are their complete opposite in the real world. They must complete multiple missions and get out of Jumanji using their knowledge as gamers.
You see, the enchanted game of Jumanji has the ability to transform. It’s no longer a board game that brings its dangers to life. Now, its evolved version can turn you into pixels and sucks you into its fantastical world. It’s a continuation of an old story, but its makes you play a different kind of game. Just imagine a Final Fantasy anthology, only with a safari-themed expedition at the center of the storyline.
Below is a list of the most hilarious moments from the film. And don’t worry, there aren’t any major spoilers here.
1) Character weaknesses are revealed
Each game avatar has their own strengths and weaknesses—whatever Spencer (Dwayne Johnson), Bethany (Jack Black), Fridge (Kevin Hart), and Martha (Karen Gillan) were in real life doesn't matter in the game. Of course, The Rock's avatar "Dr. Smolder Bravestone" has no weaknesses, the total opposite of geeky Spencer.
2) The “leak"
The resident blonde hottie turns into a curvy genius: Dr. Shelly Oberon. The punch line is the Bethany character didn’t expect her avatar to be a guy. Let’s just say she needed some tips on how to pee standing up.
3) The Rock slammed against a rock
The avatars have three lives each before it’s declared game over for a player. Dr. Bravestone loses one of his after being slammed by backpack guy "Moose Finbar" (Fridge's avatar) against a rock.
4) Everybody falls for Nick Jonas
The gang is close to getting captured by Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale) until pilot Jefferson ‘Seaplane’ McDonough (Nick Jonas' avatar) saves their asses. He immediately captures the hearts of the girls—in and out of the big screen—as he leads them to safety through an underground route.
5) A nod to a classic
In Alex’s hideout, you can see an inscription that will make you go “woah”: Alan Parrish was here.
6) A crash course in flirting
"Ruby Roundhouse" (Martha's avatar) has to seduce some guards as a distraction. Problem is, alter-ego Martha doesn’t have a clue how to do it, forcing our favorite blonde to step in. Bethany’s top tip: You must sparkle like an anime character.
7) Major LSS
You’ll come our of the cinemas humming to Peter Frampton’s “Baby I Love Your Way,” which was the background to a really cool scene, btw. Ruby Roundhouse whips those enemy asses like a queen.
8) Awkward first kiss
What happens when two kids share their first kiss inside a video game? Well, there’s some tongue action.
9) The reunion
Like the first film, everyone returns home after the game ends. The next time the Jumanji squad meets Alex, he’s already a family man.
10) Bowling ball
By the end of the film, the gang finally finds out what the bowling ball at the storage room was actually for.
