When Justice League arrives in theaters late next year, it will do so with the main villain being Steppenwolf, the military leader of the planet Apokolips.
Snyder however was tight-lipped on who will portray the villain as they were still negotiating with the actor.
Steppenwolf was actually in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but his scene was eventually cut. The clip shows Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) seemingly talking to a hologram of Steppenwolf, who was holding the three Mother Boxes, ancient computers of immense power, which according to producer Charles Roven will be key plot elements in Justice League.
Here’s the deleted scene:
Roven also stated to Empire Online that the three Mother Boxes were brought to Earth a millennia ago and that they were divided among three races: Mankind, Amazonians, and Atlanteans.
Mankind's Mother Box was actually seen in action at BvS. When Wonder Woman/Diana (Gal Gadot) opened the files Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) sent her, she stumbled on Cyborg’s (Ray Fisher) resurrection through a Mother Box.
If Cyborg has possession of a Mother Box, he may be a target for Steppenwolf.
And considering that the Atlanteans and the Amazons still have theirs, the Mother Boxes will bring Wonder Woman and Aquaman into Steppenwolf's sights as well, becoming a setup for the heroes to band together.
Snyder also confirmed that Steppenwolf would be bringing with him an army of Parademons from Apokolips, the planet ruled by supervillain Darkseid. With this revelation, an appearance of Darkseid will most likely happen.
"Obviously with the Mother Boxes and then the hints from the other movie, you know, we are dealing with Apokoliptian technology and villains and we have kind of some more visions, we're always tweaking things and everything,” added producer Deborah Snyder.
Simply titled Justice League, the ensemble film will see the biggest heroes of DC Comics (Wonder Woman, Flash [Ezra Miller], Cyborg, Superman [Henry Cavill], Aquaman [Jason Momoa], and Batman [Ben Affleck]) banding together against the forces of evil.
Justice League is set for a November 17, 2017 release. In the meantime, Suicide Squad will arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016 will Wonder Woman drops on June 2, 2017.
