Marvel Studios has finally budged amid their fans’ persistent nitpicking of the timeline of their superhero film installments that currently interconnect with the stories of The Avengers.

According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, they will be addressing the timeline issue of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has grown to 16 films since starting with Iron Man in 2008.

“All of that debate has made us go, ‘Okay, at some point, I'm not sure exactly when, we’re going to publish a timeline and see what it all is.’” He told CinemaBlend.

The whole (non-issue) issue started with the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming in June. In the film, it was stated that the events there happened eight years after the first Avengers movie, which hit theaters back in 2012.

Fans have all agreed that MCU films happen roughly the same year they were released. Based on this, it has been widely assumed that the events in Marvel’s The Avengers also happens in 2012.

Here’s where the timeline gets messy. Since Homecoming happens eight years after the first Avengers film then it’s safe to say that Spider-Man’s first standalone movie is set in 2020.

But this causes a major timeline conflict with the upcoming release of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, where Spider-Man is supposed to appear. So how can Spidey be in Infinity War if the events in Homecoming haven’t happened yet?

Here’s what one fan has to say:

Feige, for his part, has debunked this popular assumption among fans, simply saying that the timeline of their films all add up. “Other than very particular instances where there's a newspaper, or verbal reference to years, we never date the films. And I think there's a presumption, 'Well if the movie came out in November 2017, it must take place in November 2017'—which is not the case.”

We’re not sure how Marvel will address this but it’s cool to see an official timeline of all the recent Marvel films that all lead up to the looming Infinity Wars film.

There’s also an amusing theory where Dr. Strange apparently messes up the whole MCU timeline when he battled the big baddie Dormammu with the Time stone.
