When we first read about Ryan Reynolds voicing the titular role in Detective Pikachu, we thought that it was just one of those brilliant promos for Deadpool 2.

Turns out, Legendary Entertainment was serious in bringing the Canadian actor into the fold, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Reynolds will be starring alongside Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) in the live-action film based on the 2016 video game.


Detective Pikachu, which will be directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) and whose script is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), sees the beloved Pokémon helping Smith's character look for his father, who was kidnapped. It is only the second Nintendo franchise that has gotten the green light to be licensed by Hollywood, after the 1993 bomb, Super Mario Bros.
