The Metro Manila Film Festival has a mix of pretty much the same things every year: one Enteng Kabisote, one Panday, one Kris Aquino, one Ai-Ai, another Shake, Rattle, And Roll, and that one film that would stick out well enough to rock the more inane ones off the charts—like last year’s controversial Manila Kingpin: the Asiong Salonga Story.

And while this year’s batch of films (eight in all) has that same formula, it also has some potentailly good works, like Mark Meilly’s El Presidente and, of course, Brillante Mendoza’s Thy Womb. Incidentally, both films feature superstar Nora Aunor.

To help you through your holiday viewing pleasure, here’s a rundown of what to expect from this year's MMFF and why it could be actually worthwhile.
