Spy fans, rejoice! Your favorite trio of badass women is going to get a reboot! Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu may be your all-time favorite Angels, but Charlie has since hired a new trio to take on the mantle of Charlie’s Angels.
First off, the always kickass Elizabeth Banks is set to direct the film. She was also confirmed to play the role of Bosley, the communication between the angels and Charlie.
But who is going to play the iconic trio? Well, a report has confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, 12 Years A Slave), Kristen Stewart (Certain Women, Clouds of Sils Maria), and Naomi Scott (The Martian, Power Rangers) are set to play the titular roles.
At first glance, this set of women don’t seem to have the look and aura of the Angels we’re accustomed to. But that’s what will set them apart and make them unique from all the other lady spy trios we’ve seen. They’re not just here to wear tight latex suits, flaunt their curves, and look sexed-up. No. Knowing these women from their past films, they can certainly lay the smack down on perverted henchmen, and still look good while doing it.
The Angels have certainly evolved in the last few decades, and we took the liberty of tracing back the different kinds of reincarnations they've experienced.
'70s Charlie’s Angels
If you thought the first Charlie’s Angels was not until the 2000s, then you’re probably too young for this. But the first Angels were Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith. Despite the TV show proving to be a runaway hit, it was clear that these women’s sexuality was used to appeal to the audiences. The term “jiggle television” was even coined for shows like this, where the leads were dressed in loose clothing or underwear so their boobs and/or butts would jiggle during takes.
2000s Charlie’s Angels
Like its predecessor, this reincarnation of the lady spy trio is overtly sexualized, but just in an upgraded and more action-packed form. We still have to hand it to Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, for really taking their roles to greater heights and making it their own. Their appeal didn’t only come in their form-fitting clothes, but also in their comedy and plain badassery.
That Godawful 2011 TV Reboot
See that we didn’t use Charlie’s Angels for this one. That’s because they’re not worthy of the title. There are a lot of things that didn’t make this show work. For one, the confusing plot and unnecessary action sequences were just downright useless. And the trio of Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh, and Rachael Taylor didn’t have chemistry right from the get-go. They literally put the “bad” in “badass."
2019 Charlie’s Angels Movie Reboot
If you look at the actors that have been confirmed to play the new Angels, you’ll feel a little different compared to the last ones. Sure, Naomi Scott, Kristen Stewart, and Lupita Nyong’o are beautiful and sexy in their own way, but not in a lustful and raunchy way. These women appear sexy because of where they stand as women in the industry. If the writing turns out to be as good as we hope, this movie will be the very definition of girl power.
Here's a look at how these ladies can be sexy and strong at the same time:
