Prequels can be a tricky endeavor. First, you’ve to deal with expectations from the original. The case of X-men First Class, which opens today June 2, is trickier: It has to deal with expectations from the original movie, and content with the fact that it’s a superhero comic book franchise that has grossed over $1.5 billion at the box office. They're in for some sticky judgment.

Then it has the story to worry about; since it’s a prequel they need to cast young ingénues who can match the performances of the older, maybe wiser originals.

Set in the early 60s, the film features a young Professor X and Magneto pre-archenemy days as they put together a school for mutants and battle side by side. Expectations aside, we decided to pit together some of the old actors with the new ones mano-a-mano style in a classic mutant throwdown for your personal entertainment. Enjoy!

Overall verdict
Looks like the oldies trump the newbies. There’s nothing like age and experience to hone one’s natural–or mutant–abilities. We only need to see the new movie to say for sure.
