Independent film lovers and movie buffs are in for a treat as the 2016 QCinema International Film Festival officially starts this October 13.

With the theme “One City for the World,” seven full-length movies will be competing, plus eight short films will run for screening. The venues are Trinoma, Gateway, Robinsons Galleria, and UP Town Center.

Now on its fourth year, the film fest, organized by the Quezon City through its Film Development Commission, will run from October 13 to 22, 2016.

Here are the seven must-sees that are competing for the Circle Competition:

1) Ang Manananggal Sa Unit 23B by Prime Cruz

Imagine a scary manananggal falling in love. Now imagine former FHM Cover Girl Ryza Cenon as that manananggal. It's scary and sexy all at once!

2) Baboy Halas by Bagane Fiola

A family of forest dwellers become unsettled when something threatens their current living conditions.

3) Best. Partee. Ever. by Howard “HF” Yambao

Mikey (played by JC De Vera) is a wealthy gay man who is imprisoned for drug pushing. While locked up, he struggles with trying to survive the dangers of gang riots and the threats of other inmates. Bonus: indie goddess Mercedes Cabral stars in a supporting role.

4) Hinulid by Kristian Sendon Cordero

Hinulid is a collaboration between superstar Nora Aunor and director Kristian Sendon Cordero. In the film, Nora Aunor uses her native language (Bikol-Iriga) for the first time. Hinulid is about a mother who comes home to bury her son in Cagbunga, a village watched over by the Tolong Hinulid (Three Dead Christs).

5) Patay Na Si Hesus by Victor Kaiba Villanueva

Iyay (played by Jaclyn Jose) learns that her estranged husband, Hesus, has died. She drags the entire family on a road trip from Cebu to Dumaguete to attend the funeral. Iyay, along with her children, then go on a journey that is filled with surprises and revelations.

6) Purgatoryo by Roderick Cabrido

Purgatoryo tells the story of Ilyong, who was killed by the police after he was caught stealing. Ilyong's corpse is exploited by gambling lord for a sakla business. The film stars Bernardo Bernardo and Arnold Reyes.

7) Women of the Weeping River by Sheron Dayoc

Satra, a widow living in Southern Mindanao, seeks vengeance for the death of her husband and uncles. She then befriends an aging woman in the village to help her hold peace talks with a rival family.
