No matter how good an individual musician you may be, filling in for an absent band member is a difficult task. You’re trying to fit in with a group of guys that have been at it through many wars—and you’re just trying to do your part right, trying not to disrupt the band’s established chemistry.

Such a task is magnified tenfold when the band in question is Deftones, and the circumstances surrounding the substitution are far from pleasant, as fans of the band would know. During the 2011 Deftones concert here in Manila, Vega was able to prove himself in front of a hungry, raucous crowd, many of whom were seeing the band for the first time. The band tapped into their entire repertoire that night, and Vega played with tremendous heart and skill. From that point forward, Vega’s involvement had only gone deeper—with his contributions in the latest Deftones album, Koi No Yokan, helping it achieve strong, positive response from both critics and long-time fans.

(Also, it seems like he's gotten really comfortable with Chino and the rest of the boys, look how big his smile is in their video invite for Sunday's concert!)
