Global music icon David Bowie (born David Jones in London in 1947) has passed away. He was 69. The man formerly known as Ziggy Stardust succumbed to cancer after a fight that lasted 18 months.
The announcement was made on Bowie's official Facebook page earlier today:
Bowie had just released a new album, Blackstar, last January 8, his 27th and apparently his last. The titular single was released months earlier, back in November:
Decades ago, Bowie released his first album in 1967, a self-titled one. His second was also self-titled but would later on be also known as Space Oddity—the title of his first big hit included in this album.
This was his latest and apparently, final single, released just three days before his death:
Both beautiful and haunting. Both came at opposite points in his career, but his magic is that the inexplicable, affecting feeling from his works never faded even as he aged.
The world has just lost an incredible, idiosyncratic talent.
RIP, David Bowie.
