Vybe, the guys that have been treating Manila to a constant stream of just-below-the-mainstream-but-not-completely-underground alt-music acts such as Cut/Copy, Disclosure, and CHVRCHES, are at it again.
Tonight, May 14, they bring us Justice. Not the type you'd scream for when a car suddenly cuts you off on the road, but the duo comprised of Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay—French dudes who were once promising graphic design students but later transitioned to an even more promising music career in 2003. The duo will be playing live tonight at Valkyrie in BGC. For tickets, click here.
Being a French DJ duo, comparisons to that other French DJ duo, Daft Punk, can't be helped. Justice, though, has blazed a trail of their own since releasing their debut album in 2007, whose title was so peculiar that we're forced to just copy-paste it from a Wikipedia page: †. Yep, that is a cross. The cross has been a symbol for the band much like the Daft Punk helmets have been for its originators. And among Filipino fans, Justice's cross will tonight be a symbol of salvation from the hellish droning of assembly-line EDM music standard at clubs today. The duo's music takes cues from pop, electronica, rock and alternative-indie—a rich mix of influences that result in a body of work that you'd remember for loud, abrasive climaxes and dirty electro-bass hits as much as you would the French-house gloss of the easier tracks. With a true indie spirit, Justice is far more rock and roll than your typical electronic musician—a quality which has helped them set themselves apart on the field. This is evidenced by the pair's debut reaching 800,000 units sold worldwide, with its 2011 follow-up, Audio, Video, Disco reaping critical praise as well.
Tonight, we get to see just what these boys are made of in a grand congregation that Vybe has set up. Here are some of our favorite Justice songs to juice you up.
The one that started it all.
The duo's homage to all the clubs named "Divino" across the world—and according to the duo, there's at least one in every city in the world.
