Since last week, social networks have been flooded with calls to keep the universally acclaimed biopic Heneral Luna in cinemas. The theaters listened.
Today, you can still catch what could very well be the year's most important Filipino film in these cinemas:
One thing you can catch right now, though, is the music video to the movie's theme song, "Hanggang Wala Nang Bukas" by former Sugarfree frontman Ebe Dancel. The video was published on YouTube last July 5, 2015, and was directed by the the film's director himself, Jerrold Tarog. The video currently has a little over 23,000 views.
We think the number should be higher.
The song is yet another testament to Dancel's ability to reel you in with deceptively simple but powerful lyricism and his signature vocal flourishes ("Para makita kang malaya! At umibig ng payapa!") Like the film reawakening a kind of patriotism we didn't know was still there, the tune—beyond its role to represent the film in melody—is something that pacifies our fears that OPM has died. It reminds us that yes, there are artists like Ebe still making gems like this.
Watch it here:
ABS-CBN also interviewed Dancel back in June regarding his view on the film. He said, "I think there should be a little of General Luna in all of us. Let us not be afraid to stand up for the things we believe in."
Of the things we believe in today, "Hanggang Wala Nang Bukas" figures high on that list.
