Just when we were ready to completely settle for old YouTube videos of volleybelles Gretchen Ho, Fille Cainglet, and Michelle Gumabao during their glory days (like this one here), good news suddenly reached our ears.
Last Sunday, July 7, 2013 , at the PhilSports Arena, the Philippine Super Liga officially announced that they’re ready to take the local volleyball scene by storm.
Super Liga is a volleyball league that aims to give the ball-spiking sport a home, apart from what we’re already seeing in the UAAP and NCAA. It's the answer to the supposed dead-end a volleyball player reaches at the end of her playing years in college. It gives these ladies the opportunity to continue to play and compete in a semi-professional club format. Simply put, Super Liga is the PBA of local volleyball.
The inaugural competition will be composed of six teams all hauling in a score of talented players, such as Gretchen, Fille, and Michelle, and also "returning" volleyball stars like Maika Ortiz, Lou Ann Latigay, and Angge Tabaquero. Even athlete-turned-newscaster Ivy Remulla and FHM Babe Michelle Datuin are joining in on the Super Liga fun.
The teams competing for the first ever Super Liga championship are PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo Puffins, Philippine Army Lady Troopers, PLDT MyDSL Speed Boosters, Team Cignal HD, Cagayan Valley Rising Suns, and early fan favorite Petron Lady Boosters.
Let’s now take a closer look at the volleybelles we’ll see on Super Liga:
PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo Puffins
It’s a La Salle alumna party as PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo builds its roster with top acts from the graduate class of the De La Salle Lady Spikers. Ace blocker and court heartthrob Michelle Gumabao leads the Animo group also composed of former Shakeys’s V-league MVP Maureen Penetrante, setter Chi Saet, Iris Patrona, and the comebacking Ivy Remulla.
Expect to see: More Michelle Gumabao close-ups. It’s been barely a year since the long-legged beauty celebrated a UAAP Volleyball championship with her teammates. The reigning UAAP Finals MVP has since been busy doing TV appearances, one after the other, thanks to her artistahin looks and bubbly personality.
Philippine Army Lady Troopers
The team also known as Hukbong Katihan ng Pilipinas (check out the logo!) is definitely not a team that will go away with just one quick smash. The Army Troopers is composed of proven veteran players, such as UST’s former wunderkind Mary Jean Balse (fourth from left) and Letran’s super sisters Michelle and Mayeth Carolino (second and fifth from left). Despite losing to the Cagayan Rising Suns during the opener, the hardened Lady Troopers are still widely considered as the team to beat in Super Liga.
Expect to see: Or not see Rachelle Anne Daquis. Yes, it’s a complete disappointment that we won’t be able to see the FHM 100 Sexiest entry and true heartthrob in her short shorts this year because she’s in Germany. But there’s always next season, right? Luckily, there's still Mayette Carolino to give us a dose of eye candy.
