Last March 22, 2010, Brandon Vera faced Jon Jones in a light heavyweight bout that saw Jones knock out Vera with several elbow strikes to the head near the end of the 1st round.
Heartbreaking and upsetting, considering the fact that his career might be on the downfall as of late.
Still, Brandon Vera can only exemplify what thousands of Pinoy men could only dream of doing: compete in the world’s ultimate proving ground for fighting which is in the UFC.
He is not merely as dominant in MMA as Manny Pacquiao is in boxing, but he sure caught every MMA fans’ fancy with his fair share of KO victories and charismatic presence.
Brandon has the look of a champion, and everybody knows it. A single glimpse of the guy would be enough not to associate him with the likes of Brock Lesnar or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. But his fighting style is so established that you can’t help but to admire his fundamentals.
Vera once said that his goal is “to become both the heavyweight and light heavyweight champion” at the same time, something no one has achieved before, and rightly so. His recent fights saw him enter the octagon to the tune of Apl.D.Ap’s “Bebot,” recognizing his Filipino roots all the way.
It is with utmost pleasure to recognize “The Truth” in return, as we take a look at five of Brandon’s UFC matches that helped define his illustrious career.
Brandon Vera vs. Justin Eilers – UFC 57
In one of Brandon’s earlier bouts inside the octagon, he faced a typical muscular heavyweight in the late Justin Eilers. Our countryman wasted no time in making a statement, as he dazed Eilers with a high kick to the top right side of the head.
He followed with a vicious knee to the face that literally put the big guy to sleep. It was ridiculously brutal, but most of all, it was Vera signaling his launch in the heavyweight division.
