On Tuesday night, Chot Reyes relinquished his post as head coach of the Philippines men's national basketball team...for now.

The two-time Gilas Pilipinas mentor (2013-14, 2016-18), who produced a silver medal in the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship and a historic return to the Fiba World Cup the following year, Tweeted that he came out of retirement two years ago when Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan asked him back.

"Now that the PBA has opened its doors fully to the SBP and the national team, it is time for me to step aside and contribute in a different capacity, focusing on the 2023 program," Reyes stated.

The move may be temporary, though, as he said he will "step aside" rather than "step down" for good. The president of TV5 added that he will concentrate on the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup build-up and the country's hosting, so he will not be out of the picture entirely.

Reyes' tenure as Gilas coach was far from perfect—he resigned in 2014 after a dismal showing in the Asian Games, and recently, he was involved in the infamous basket-brawl between PH and Australia during a FIBA World Cup Asian qualifying game. NLEX Road Warriors tactician Yeng Guiao then took over for him in this year's Asiad.

Still, PBA players, some of whom played for the national team under Reyes, and other prominent figures in basketball gave the veteran taskmaster a fitting farewell on social media.
