Retired boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya has called on boxing fans to boycott the brewing inter-sport megabout between undefeated slugger Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and UFC champion Conor McGregor, should the match happen in the future.

The usually reserved Mexican legend-turned-promoter composed a lengthy message to express his disapproval of the potential matchup, which he believes will be the ultimate undoing of the sport of boxing.

“It’s a win-win for them. It’s a lose-lose for us. We’ll be $100 lighter and we will have squandered another opportunity to bring boxing back to its rightful place as the sport of kings. At this point, only we can shut the circus down by making it clear that we won’t pay to see a joke of a fight and telling our casual-fan friends that they shouldn’t either,” he said.

We’re not in a position to disagree with the totally valid points the “Golden Boy” made, but Mayweather vs. McGregor is the ultimate fight that fans want to witness.

Still, De La Hoya’s not alone, his former boxing foe and now Senator Manny Pacquiao also seems to be against the fight, which he initially scoffs at in the video below (watch for the 3:05 mark).

However, Pacquiao sort of contradicted himself by saying he was open to fighting McGregor in the boxing ring himself.

Pacquiao’s old rival, Juan Manuel Marquez, also sides with his fellow Mexican, saying it’s a big disrespect to even consider the match. Turn on the subtitles to read the wise words from “El Dinamita.”

Another Pacquiao foe in British boxer Ricky Hatton means no disrespect, but states that boxing and UFC are simply just two different disciplines that can’t mix.

Meanwhile, two-weight world champion Canelo Alvarez thinks it’s all a joke.

Retired boxing heavyweight legend “Iron” Mike Tyson for his part has a fresh take and thinks the megabout is going to be interesting (3:00 mark).

Hype over the Mayweather vs. McGregor matchup has steadily risen since last year, as both fighters trash talk each other whenever they can. But now, what seemed to be a running gag is one step closer to becoming reality after McGregor recently signed his end of the deal to push through with the inter-sport megabout.
