Looks like the basketball gods are really smiling on us this year!
After a strong campaign in the first two rounds of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, finishing with an impressive 4-1 win-loss card and clinching the top spot in Group E, Gilas Pilipinas are just three wins away from nabbing the championship. Finish in the top three, and we secure a spot in the FIBA World Basketball Cup next year in Spain—a feat we have not achieved in decades.
Gilas is scheduled to face today, August 9, a dangerous Kazakhstan team in a knockout game for a semifinal berth. Their opponent is best known for their tall players, all of whom are capable of shooting. Though the national squad already faced the Kazakhs during a pre-FIBA Asia tune-up match where we escaped with a narrow victory, we shouldn't be too sure of ourselves. Past performance doesn't ascertain that we can duplicate the win, especially if we consider how the Kazakhs have improved—they almost pulled an upset over Asian powerhouse China a few days ago.
Will we pull another W against the taller ballers from Kazakhstan and march on to the next round? We put our basketball thinking caps on and plot Gilas Pilipinas' keys to victory!
