Before Gilas Pilipinas lost to Australia in an epic blowout, the game turned into an ugly brawl in the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Monday at the Philippine Arena.
The Boomers were leading the home team by a wide margin, 79-48, with 4:01 left in the third quarter, when things started to get tense between Roger Pogoy and Aussie Chris Goulding. All hell broke loose after the two exchanged cheap shots. The likes of AUS's Daniel Kickert, Thon Maker, PHI's Andray Blatche and Terrence Romeo joined in on the punch-fest, before benches were cleared.
Thirteen players were ejected from the game: Maker, Nathan Sobey, Kickert and Goulding [four] from Australia, and Romeo, Jayson Castro, Carl Bryan Cruz, Calvin Abueva, Blatche, Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar and Matthew Wright [nine] from the Gilas. Only Gabe Norwood, June Mar Fajardo, and Baser Amer were left in the Gilas' side. The final score: 89-53. But in terms of saving face, no one was a winner.
