Last night, July 26, Team Gilas Pilipinas and Nike unveiled a crucial component to our national team's campaign in the fast-approaching FIBA World Cup: the new jerseys!
The unveiling was held at the Treston International College at The Fort, where we found out that our boys will be decked in uniforms that are striking for their elegant simplicity. We first shared the reveal via our official Instagram account:
Here's a closer look:
"Pilipinas" is emblazoned in thick, vibrant letters on the front, while a very snazzy sun occupies the entire back portion. As for performance, the new uniforms are said to be made of Nike's "Sphere fabric," which is designed to be lightweight, breathable, and durable.
Other performance features include articulated armholes that provide enhanced range of motion while laser cut perforations provide ventilation.
Point man L.A. Tenorio approves of the new unis: “The new uniforms are lighter in weight, which is an advantage for us when we play. Together with the heat management, it will keep us comfortable through the games.”
Coach Chot Reyes likewise provided insight as to what the unis means on a cultural level: “Basketball is more than a sport for Filipinos. It is in our blood, our DNA, woven into the Filipino culture. The new uniforms will be worn with pride, on the world stage in Spain as we show the world what Filipino basketball is all about and bring pride to the Philippines.”
He also offered a few fighting words as to what the team intends to bring to the games, in spite of the odds:
Swingman Larry Fonacier had a few more things to add to Coach Chot's ra-ra speech: "I don't think [what the team will feel this time around] is kaba, it's going to be more like a privilege to go against these guys [from around the globe]. We're going to be realistic about our chances naman. Unlike [at the 2013 Fiba-Asia] na we really had to defend our homecourt—and the only option in our head was to qualify for Spain.
Eto naman, to be realistic, this is going to be a learning experience for us, so we just want to take advantage of the opportunity."
As to who he's excited to face in the world games? "Of course, si [Manu] Ginobili, I'm a San Antonio Spurs' fan, and going up against him will really, really be a dream come true."
Fonacier finishes that whatever happens in Spain, he "just can't help but get excited. You want to do everything to make your country proud. Sa lahat ng aming kababayan, puso lagi ang ibibigay namin para sa inyo!"
The new Philippines' National Basketball Team uniforms will be available in both Home and Away versions starting July 1 at all Nike stores and the following selected locations: Athletic Club, Toby’s, 1 United, Prostar, Planet Sports, Titan, Landmark, Lee Super Plaza, Royal Sporting house, and Sports Central!
