So much for those crying out that this was a rigged championship series! The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel captured the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup trophy at the expense of the San Miguel Beermen for their third title in three years.
The league's most popular team was touted as the underdog in the Finals matchup, going up against its sister team and arguably the "greatest team of all time," according to Ginebra coach Tim Cone. The Beermen—Philippine Cup titleholders for four consecutive years and Commissioner's Cup defending champs—were led by reigning four-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo and comebacking import Renaldo Balkman.
Instead, the Barangay shocked SMB with a blowout in Game 1, before the latter returned the favor in their next two matches. Ginebra evened the series with another rout, then prevented a do-or-die after a crucial four-point win in Game 5. Justin Brownlee justified his first Best Import award with his third championship, Scottie Thompson was named Finals MVP, and Cone proved that he is still the best tactician in the PBA.
Amid the festivites, some Ginebra players expressed the euphoria of securing another title for the decorated franchise.
Joe Devance, the unofficial king of PBA Twitter, didn't mince words when addressing those who counted them out vs SMB.
One thing that you can respect about the Beermen aside from their dominance is their graciousness in defeat.
