Kobe Paras' successful title defense of his FIBA 3x3 Slam Dunk Contest trophy proved two things: Pinoys can now flat-out soar and that the Benjie Paras basketball genes are really strong with this one.
You see, the teen phenom is primed for superstardom, being the more skilled Paras kid (so sorry, Andre). Already as tall (or maybe even taller) as his dad at 17, Kobe is also steadily improving his game by the day, as seen in viral videos and news bits about his games abroad. Even retired NBA star Rip Hamilton said that he has the "tools" to make it to the big league.
Aside from the work that Kobe has put in, it would be a sin not to credit his father Benjie, who was the first Paras to take the local basketball scene by storm, for the kid's skills. The Tower of Power holds the distinction of copping both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the 1989 PBA season—a feat that remains unchallenged even today.
Despite their bond and probably countless hours of playing ball with one another, their playing styles are not that similar. Benjie established himself as one of the greatest Pinoy big men while Kobe is more of a guard-forward hybrid, having both the height and the speed to compete in the two and three spots. Ultimately, their only similarity is their knack for slamming the ball through the hoop.
That said, imagine an alternate universe wherein the two could go head-to-head in, say, a dunk competition? Will Kobe's aerial acrobatics top his pops' powerful throwdowns? You be the judge of these sick, gravity-defying GIFs...
KOBE'S ABOVE-THE-RIM DALLIANCE
Much has been said (and uploaded) about the UCLA-bound younger Paras, so we figured, we extract his best jams from his latest mixtape by Ballislife2.0, in a game with his team, the LA Cathedral Phantoms:
Sumakay ka pa!
Just another dunk contest slam for Kobe...
Bonus: Remember this?
BENJIE'S SHOW OF POWER
Forgive us for the über-low-res GIFs below; we had to dig deep into YouTube to get hold of the Tower of Power's forceful flushes. If any of you has a clear copy of Benjie's highlight reel, we'll be more than happy to accept it as a gift:
This is why he's also called Dunkin Donato...
No hair? No problem!
He got Bonel Balingit good!
So, what do you think, FHM Nation? Is Benjie still the better Paras slammer or has Kobe surpassed him in the posterization department? Sound off in the comments section!
