We know this will sound cheesy, but we'll say it anyway: Manny Pacquiao is back!
Fine, it wasn't the most exciting fight in the world, but it’s been close to two years since Manny last won a fight, and four since he scored a frigging knockout. At this point, we just want to see our idol back in the win column, okay?
All the same, Manny, congratulations for beating the crap out of Brandon Rios! This is exactly what our country needs right now. Salamat!
We've got to admit though: We had a lot of questions coming into this fight. And yes, we doubted Manny for a second there, and we're sorry. But the good news is that's not the case anymore. After yesterday's beatdown, we bet nobody's going to ask the following questions below again:
Will age and ring rust slow Manny down?
No, sir, he didn’t slow down much. Much like the Manny of old, he was easily able to tag and circle around Brandon, further limiting his frustrated opponent's already limited arsenal in the process. Sure, he isn't a human wrecking ball any more, but yesterday's fight proved that Pac-Man isn't about to set an appointment with Father Time anytime soon.
Will Manny box more cautiously from now on?
Why, he most certainly did. Notice how Manny and Brandon almost always freeze in the final seconds of every round? The pre-Marquez-knockout Manny would have stepped right in with a couple more punches before the bell rang. And you know what, good for him.
Will Manny’s aura of invincibility return when he steps in the ring?
We kept on thinking the entire fight how Manny was only one overeager move away from once again getting hit in the face with a career-ending haymaker. Sorry, idol, the trauma is still there, and you did not get our vote of confidence in this one. Maybe a couple more convincing wins ought to do the trick?
Is Brandon’s chin really as tough as they say it is?
In all fairness to Bam-Bam, he took Manny’s strikes head on. Brandon was a pretty easy guy to hit–Manny smothered him with over 280 punches–yet our idol wasn’t able to wobble him at any point during the fight. Heck, he even managed to smile a lot and kid around in between. Freddie Roach said it best post-fight: “Brandon took a beating, but he took a beating like a man.”
