Next season will be the last time that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will allow foreign student-athletes to compete in every sporting event—and it's not only in basketball. The NCAA aims to go import-free by 2020.
"The NCAA policy board decided to allow foreign players to suit up only until Season 95 in all sports,"
Frank Gusi, new management committee chairman of the country's oldest collegiate league, was quoted by SPIN.ph during the recent Philippine Sportswriters (PSA) Forum.
As early as Season 90, the NCAA discouraged member universities from recruiting foreigners, in hopes of an All-Filipino tournament starting 2021. The committee decided to implement the ruling, which will greatly affect San Beda's Toba Eugene and St. Benilde's Chrisian leutcheu (eligible until Season 96), a season sooner.
Interestingly, Senator Manny Pacquiao and his Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League have come under fire for the latter's one-Fil-foreigner-per-team quota. It came as no suprise that the issue divided social media, with some supporting and others opposing the latest development from the NCAA.
The irony of Pinoy pride, right?
Sets a bad precedent, TBH
This isn't even a matter of parity
Bordering on Trump-esque (yikes)
Can't blame people for calling it 'racist'
Greater competition means greater progress
