College athletics will be a little quieter with the passing of longtime UAAP and NCAA barker Rolly Manlapaz. He was 53.

According to a report by SPIN.ph, the man regarded as the voice of collegiate basketball succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on Thursday. Manlapaz, who also called PBA, MBA, and volleyball games, was apparently battling the illness for four months now, and even had to be revived earlier today.

He made a name for himself with his booming vocals and creative nicknames, particularly for basketball players, during live matches. Manalapaz is credited for christening the likes of Calvin "The Beast" Abueva, Kiefer Ravena, Nino "KG" Kanaleta, and Enrico "The Raging Bull" Villanueva.

The monikers by the baritone coliseum announcer are so catchy that they are carried on from the UAAP and the NCAA to the PBA. As such, professional cagers joined fans and other sports personalities in paying tribute to the iconic Manlapaz.
