Considered one of the best gyms in the country, Team Lakay is the breeding ground for Wushu and MMA champions who regularly compete to bring honor to the Philippines and their hometown in the north. The brainchild of Coch Mark “The Machine” Sangiao, who was a successful competitor himself, Team Lakay is known for their conditioning, heavy hands, and devastating kicks. Recently, they have added a strong wrestling and submission game to their repertoire to round out their already impressive skill set.
This proud Baguio gym is the home of local heroes, former One Championship Lightweight Champion Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang, current One Championship Interim Flyweight Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, One Championship Lightweight contender Honorio “The Rock” Banario, One Championship Bantamweight contender Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, One Championship Featherweight contender Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly, and current Brave Combat Federation Bantamweight Champion Stephen Loman to name only a few.
Despite their local and international success, Team Lakay feels more like a family than merely a Martial Arts Gym. The trust that the fighters have in their coach and teammates is truly enviable. As Kevin Belingon shares when asked about who pushes him the most in the gym: “Si Coach Mark [Sangiao] ang laging nag pu-push sa amin. Siya nagsasabing ‘Kelangan ganito ang aralin natin.’ Si coach talaga lahat.”
In their road to becoming the country's top team, Team Lakay has had their share of defeats. But just like a true champion, they rise up, learn from their mistakes, and get right back on the road to winning. Committed to training and on being constantly active, Team Lakay does not sit on its laurels. This June 23, Geje Eustaquio looks to unify the Flyweight belt by beating Brazilian Adriano Moraes at the One Championship: Pinnacle of Power in Macau while Kevin Belingon will have his shot at the Bantamweight belt on July 27 against current champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes.
