Heading into our first game in the second round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers against Iran in Tehran, Coach Yeng Guiao revealed his final 12-man roster for the new Team Pilipinas.

According to spin.phGreg Slaughter won’t be seeing action anytime soon while recovering from an ankle injury. Coach Yeng has opted to save the big man for the closed-door game against Qatar on Monday.

The squad will be retaining players from the Asian Games including Paul Lee, Beau Belga, Raymond Almazan, Gabe Norwood, JP Erram, and Tito Asi Taulava. There’s the returning Allein Maliksi, and the debuting Ian Sangalang. Now that’s a total of eight, and if you’re wondering where the others are, well we’ve separated them from the pack. These standouts or x-factors are the players to watch in the coming tournament.

Scottie Thompson

Being dubbed as the Russell Westbrook of the Philippines can add pressure on any player, but not Scottie Thompson. He lives up to it, takes it as a challenge, and proves he deserves that label. The triple-double machine has exactly that to offer to the national team, and then some. It would also be exciting to see how this rebounding guard will fair against the giants of the international scene.

Marcio Lassiter

Marcio Lassiter is a deadeye from just about anywhere on the floor. From threes to putbacks, he’s got it all going for him. But the best thing that separates him from the other scorers in the PBA and in Gilas, is his clutch game. It seems like Lassiter is at his best during crunch time, and quite honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Christian Standhardinger

Yes, it’s official! Christian Standhardinger has been picked as our sole naturalized player, and for obvious reasons. He’s the fiercest big man on the roster as shown in his most recent stint with Gilas in the Asian Games. He was a surprise talent coming off the bench, showing how he’s perfect for international competition, going up against and bulldozing the best of them on the biggest stage of international basketball.

Alex Cabagnot

Alex Cabagnot is a relentless scorer. If you put his highlight reel beside Stanley Pringle’s, you’d see the obvious similarities between the two. With Cabagnot now part of the 12-man Gilas squad, it seems we have an equivalent for the talent we lost in Pringle.
