Congratulations are in order for the FEU Tamaraws, UAAP Season 78's Men's Basketball champions!
The Morayta-based squad beat the UST Growling Tigers in Game 3 of the Finals, eking out a hard-earned 67-62 victory.
Finals MVP Mac Belo led the charge for the Tamaraws, scoring a game-high 23 points while forward Roger Pogoy and guard Mike Tolomia (the aforementioned players make up FEU's dreaded Big Three) added 14 and 13 points, respectively. FEU also outrebounded UST, 45-37.
On the side of the Gold-and-White, Ed Daquioag and rookie Marvin Lee came up big, combining for a blistering 16-0 run that gave the Growling Tigers the lead 57-51 with five minutes left in the game. However, the Tamaraws would respond with a back-breaking 14-3 salvo that ultimately sealed the win for FEU. Kevin Ferrer, whose 24-point third quarter in Game 2 is among the most spectacular offensive shows in local college hoops history, struggled mightily, managing only six points on just seven attempts.
With the win, FEU grabbed their first crown in a decade, or since Arwind Santos and co. defeated DLSU in 2005.
The Tamaraws won the season, but we're tipping our hats to both teams. Thank you for such a spectacular and hard-fought Finals, gents!
