Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao recently crossed each other's paths at a music festival in Tokyo. Although the actual dialogue between the two boxers is hard to make out in the video because of the background music, Mayweather’s Instagram post is pretty clear.
Mayweather and Pacquiao, arguably the two greatest boxers of their generation, first met inside the ring on May 2, 2015, in what was then dubbed The Fight of the Century. Although Mayweather came out on top, keeping his perfect record, the fight did not live up to the hype. Mayweather employed his typical defensive game which although smart, is extremely boring to watch. Pacquiao, meanwhile, tried his best to pursue but came up short leaving fans to wonder if he still had the same tenacity and killer instinct that made him a superstar.
After the match, the two went their separate ways. Manny would go on to fight four more times, winning his latest bout against Lucas Martin Matthysse capturing the WBA World Welterweight title. Mayweather came back out of retirement again and squared off against MMA superstar Connor McGregor whom he beat via a 10th round TKO.
Up until Floyd's IG post, no one was really talking about a possible rematch between the two Hall of Famers—and it could even be argued that nobody was really looking for one. But in typical Mayweather fashion, the announcement was as flamboyant as it could be and we get sucked into the frenzy all over again.
As expected, several news outlets immediately picked up the story:
and as the news spread, the internet inevitably weighed in.
