This PBA draft happening on Sunday has us quite excited. Yesterday we brought you the Top 5 PBA Number 1 Picks of All-time and that was rad. Today, we bring you the promised second half: The underrated ballers who proved everyone otherwise! [firstpara]
Year drafted: 1993 (Round 2, 12th overall, Purefoods)
Awards: Two-time Mythical First team, Three-time Mythical Second team, Mr. Quality Minutes (1993)
He had the misfortune of having Jun Limpot, Victor Pablo, and Johnny Abarrientos for company in the 1993 PBA Draft. He wound up getting picked in the second round by Purefoods, where he backed up lead guard Dindo Pumaren. It was a role that later won him the year's Mr. Quality Minutes award. In 1997, he blossomed into one of the nation's top playmakers when he joined San Miguel, a team that to this day regard him as one of its cornerstones.
Year drafted: 1989 (11th overall, San Miguel)
Awards: MVP (1992), Three-time Mythical First team, Most Improved Player (1991)
In one of the most dramatic career turnarounds in PBA history, Agustin went from a forgotten college star to a Most Improved player awardee to an MVP in a span of only three years. The fact that he did this while playing alongside a still-in-his-prime Ramon Fernandez in San Miguel made his feat even more remarkable. "The Atom Bomb" followed up his greatest season by forming with Caidic and Lim what arguably has been the deadliest backcourt trio ever seen in the PBA.
