FHM Nation, let's all congratulate the Ateneo Lady Eagles for winning the UAAP Season 76 Women's Volleyball crown last Saturday, March 15, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena!
The blue squad, who served as the underdogs during the entire series, swept the La Salle Lady Spikers in the fourth and final game, 25-23, 26-24, and 25-21. We have to admit, we thought this series would go down a different path; the Spikers, after all, were the defending champs, and were coming off a 30-game win streak. But look where Ateneo's brand of #puso got them!
"Naisip namin na worth it lahat ng pinaghirapan namin," league MVP Alyssa Valdez, who led her team to victory with 21 points, tells abs-cbnnews.com "Ang ine-expect ng lahat na Final Four yung goal namin, tapos andito kami ngayon, nakatayo. Nakuha pa namin yung award." Don't you just love it when Cinderella stories come to life?
And because we didn't want to miss out on the action and the ensuing celebration, we sent down our photographer to cover the game, and what he captured on camera would leave you all teary-eyed (or wide-eyed, these are snaps of sweaty, pretty, and athletic women after all). Scroll down to see the many emotional moments that took place during and after the game!
Believe us when we tell you that every point mattered. Have you seen the set scores?
Ateneo's blocking was organized while La Salle struggled with their receiving the entire game.
Ateneo stars Valdez and Amy Ahomiro collapsing on the floor: This is how physically taxing the deciding game was.
Both teams displayed a never-say-die attitude, but La Salle team captain Aby Maraño was just a tad more intense than everybody else.
In the end however, it was the Lady Eagles who sealed the deal. Valdez scored Ateneo's last three points, including a spike that three Lady Spikers couldn't keep in play. As soon as the championship point hit, pandemonium broke loose inside the Mall of Asia Arena.
