Major news rocked the MMA community this week: UFC President Dana White officially announced the merger between fight promotions World Extreme Cagefighting and the Ultimate Fighting Championship effective January 1, 2011.
You read that right. All WEC fighters will now fold into the UFC stable, taking its bantamweight and featherweight divisions along with it, bringing the UFC weight divisions to seven (from bantamweight to heavyweight).
World Extreme Cagefighting is the UFC’s sister promotion under the Zuffa banner, and is home to some of the most renowned bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight fights in MMA history.
The promotion also served as stepping stone to current UFC fighters Brandon Vera, Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit, and Chris Leben. WEC even boasts one of the biggest stars in MMA to date, courtesy of Jose Aldo.
