Right behind the footsteps left behind by American Idol stalwarts Jessica Sanchez and Jasmine Trias is another woman that has made the country proud in the art of singing: 47-year-old OFW Rose Fostanes.
The Filipina caregiver who had been working abroad for 20 years now was crowned last week, January 15, as the grand champion of the reality talent search X Factor Israel. Unlike the other Filipinas who have joined A.I., this time around, our manok made it to the very top of the contest. With a bit of irony, the Filipina caregiver chose to sing a song that has claimed the lives of many drunk videoke singers in the land: Frank Sinatra's "My Way."
Today, Fostanes takes another step in her burgeoning career as she has finally acquired a singing license in Israel. In a report by an Israel news site, Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar has instructed the Population, Immigration and Border Authority to give Fostanes a work permit that would allow her to work in the country as a paid singer and entertainer. Previously, Fostanes held a special caregiver visa that prohibited other forms of employment.
Rose now gets to open a new chapter in her life, and should be an inspiration not just to the Philippines but especially to the 40,000 caregivers currently in Israel.
Today, we pay a little tribute to the powerful singer, as we recount five of her best numbers in the contest that many of us probably didn't get to watch.
We start with a cover of this song from this generation's biggest fame monster:
5) Lady Gaga "Born This Way"
While the judges of the show said that this wasn't their favorite performance from Fontanes, the viewers thought otherwise, and kept voting Fontanes to the top. The performance was a little rough around the edges (with one of the judges saying that it sounded like a karaoke rendition), but her raw power managed to propel her to the Final 7 after this song.
4) Tom Jones - "I Who Have Nothing"
