Every year, cosplayers, comic book geeks, as well as movie and television buffs come to San Diego, California for the annual San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). It has since become one of the hottest pop culture events in the world with a lot of celebrities coming to visit to promote their upcoming blockbuster or TV series.
You've probably seen the trailers for superhero movies like Wonder Woman, Doctor Strange, and the Justice League that had the internet abuzz (we put them all together here). But equally exciting are some of the shows that were featured during Comic-Con. Here are some of the TV series that got us excited and we're sure to be binge-watching in the months to come.
Luke Cage is an upcoming TV series from Marvel Studios that will exclusively be shown on Netflix. It tells the story of Luke Cage (obviously) a former convict turned crimefighting hero whose powers include superhuman strength and an unbreakable skin. So you can't insult him with "Tigas ng mukha mo!" kasi literally matigas ang balat niya. That short clip of him ripping the doors off of a car and kicking ass while Old Dirty Bastard's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" plays in the background has definitely got our attention.
Another Marvel superhero will soon be making his appearance on the small screen. Also a Netflix exclusive, Iron Fist tells the story of martial arts practitioner Danny Rand, who goes missing for years and comes back to fight corruption in New York City. (Pwede bang imbitahan sa Pilipinas yan? Mag-chip in chip in na tayo sa pamasahe!) The show will star Finn Jones who you'll probably recognize as the guy who played the role of Loras Tyrell on Game of Thrones.
If you've already been watching Daredevil and/or Jessica Jones on TV, then you've probably heard about Marvel's plans to make a show about The Defenders. Well it was finally confirmed during Comic-Con when the teaser for The Defenders was released. To the unfamiliar, The Defenders is somewhat like the Avengers but they mostly deal with mystical and supernatural threats. Doctor Strange, The Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer were its original members in the comics but the TV version will feature Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Together they'll be fighting to save New York. Teka lang, bakit ba parang ang gulo na lang palagi sa New York?!
Star Trek Discovery
Trekkies all over the world rejoice! After its recent successes in cinemas, Star Trek will be making a return to television with a new ship and a new title. The cast and characters have yet to be revealed but what we do know so far is that it will be set in the Star Trek universe of the TV shows that came before it and not the rebooted Star Trek universe by J.J. Abrams. Hopefully it features a Filipino cast member since almost every cruise ship in the world today has a Filipino onboard. You mean to tell me that there's room in the USS Enterprise for a green-skinned alien but not a Pinoy? C'mon guys let's make this happen!
If you've seen the trailer for Legion than you probably have a lot of questions about it just like I do. The most burning one being: Why is there a Bollywood dance sequence in the middle of it that seemingly came out of nowhere?! The trailer definitely looks trippy as hell. What we do know so far is that Legion is the first live-action series to be based on the X-Men comic books. It tells the story of David Haller, a man who's convinced that he's crazy but just might be "the most powerful mutant we've ever encountered." We still don't know yet if that's true pero yun ang sabi ng voiceover eh so malay mo naman! But there might be some truth to it because in one background story, David just happens to be the son of none other than Professor Xavier. Woah.
What is it with these trailers and their clever use of background music?! American Gods is based on the award-winning novel by Neil Gaiman that deals with ancient and modern mythology. The premise of the novel is that gods and mythological creatures exist because humans believe in them. New gods have come to existence because of America's obsession with celebrities, technology, and drugs among other things. American Gods follows the story of Shadow, a convict released early from prison because of the death of his wife. He becomes a bodyguard for the mysterious Mr. Wednesday who takes him on a trip across America for reasons that will soon be revealed to him and audiences worldwide.
Game of Thrones
One of the hottest properties every year in SDCC is of course the much-talked about Game of Thrones. Season 6 ended on such a thrilling note that everyone's counting the days until the next season premieres. While not much was shown during Comic-Con, a lot of the cast members were there to sign autographs and do interviews and no less than Sansa Stark herself has confirmed a hunch that a lot of fans have been worrying about since the season finale. In an interview, actress Sophie Turner said that “[Sansa] believes they should both be King and Queen of the North... I don’t believe she thinks Jon is capable of running Winterfell and the North.” Is there trouble brewing in Winterfell? And just when we thought everything was starting to look up for the Starks! Kasalanan ni Littlefinger lahat 'to eh!
The Walking Dead
I have a love-hate relationship with The Walking Dead. When it's good, it's one of the most entertaining and heart attack-inducing shows in all of television. But it can be really frustrating when the pace slows down and a lot of characters can be really annoying sometimes. But that's probably the secret to The Walking Dead's success and why it's considered by a lot of people as must-see TV. You dread to see your favorite characters die and you can't wait to see if the ones that annoy you has died yet. Season 6 ended in a cliff-hanger that frustrated some fans but definitely made everyone anticipate the premiere of Season 7. The final scene had the show's new main villain, Negan, kill a still yet to be known member of Rick's group. Everyone's been speculating about it ever since with some people even spying on the set of the show to see who among the actors are no longer there. The mystery ends this October when The Walking Dead makes its return.
With a lot of great shows coming out, it definitely seems like the year 2017 will be a great one for couch potatoes all across the globe. Mahihirapan na naman yung nanay mong utusan kang maghugas ng plato at tumulong sa mga gawaing bahay.
Rey de la Cruz Jr. likes talking about films as much as he likes watching them. He runs www.reyview.org, a site that provides Filipino moviegoers with reviews written in a voice that is uniquely Pinoy.
