It’s not everyday we get to encounter a dude-friendly TV series we are not ashamed of admitting watching religiously. Entourage and The Sopranos come to mind.
Sons of Anarchy is fast going in at the top of that list.
The show is garnering bigger numbers by the season, initially averaging 2 million viewers during the first and now peaking at 5 million on its third.
Anarchy centers on young biker Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller (Charlie Hunnam), who despite being only in his early-30s serves as the Vice-President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club’s Redwood Original (SAMCRO).
His step dad Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman of Hellboy fame) on the other hand is the leader of the motorcycle gang, known for importing illegal weapons and protecting the town of Charming, California in exchange for compensation.
They also happen to have rival gangs outside of Charming, namely The Mayans Motorcycle Club, The Grim Bastards, The Devil’s Tribe, and The Calaveras. If you’re thinking Grand Theft Auto, then you will like it.
Crime syndicates are another thing: the bikers from SAMCRO are also getting heat from the Cacuzza crime family, the Lin Triad, the Russian Mafia, and several white supremacist gangs. And the cops; there’ll always be cops.
With all the gangs rounding out the streets of California, you would think that internal differences are the least of their concerns, but Jax apparently struggles just the same as he starts to question the beliefs and the lawless ways of his gang.
A personal battle over power, money, and blood, is exactly what Jax and Clay go through in this series. And that is every bit the drama dude-friendly TV series audiences can put up with.
The series has already been picked up for a fourth season, indicating that the bikers’ journey to county domination will have to go a little longer. All the same, we see plenty of angas moments and town takeovers coming our way.
Sons of Anarchy airs back-to-back episodes every Sunday, 9pm on Jack TV.
