Henry Cavill has just been announced as the man to play the The Witcher's protagonist, the monster-hunting and sorceress-loving Geralt of Rivia, in Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation. Whenever a property as big as The Witcher gets the real-life treatment, well, you can be sure that fans will have major opinions on who gets cast. We're excited to see the current Man of Steel take on another well-loved character, but we also have reservations because we've been burned before—so let's break down the pros and cons of Cavill bringing Geralt to life on the small screen.

He's too handsome

Aside from being possibly too swole as well, Cavill just has this extremely-good-looking aura that prevents people from imagining him as the sickly pale, scarred, old, and overall quite grungy Geralt. We can see the point of people who point at Mads Mikkelsen as a better visual match for example. But then again, look at this edit and you may be swayed.

He's too famous

A familiar cry is "I prefer someone unknown" when it comes to filling in the shoes of famous literary or gaming heroes. Think Kit Harington debuting as Jon Snow. On the other hand, you have Angelina Jolie playing Lara Croft as an example of the actor being bigger than the role—whether that was actually good or bad for the first Tomb Raider movies is also up for debate. Plus, some people are worried that he may have a humongous TF attached to that fame that may suck all the life out of the budget.

2001 feels so far away bros!

BvS sucked, Justice League sucked, therefore Cavill sucks

The most mababaw con. Cavill isn't the sole reason why DC's last few superhero movies haven't been well-received but some people make the connection in their heads anyway. It is easy to solely remember and judge an actor by his last major role though, so if Superman left a bad taste in your mouth, then you might have some baggage heading into The Witcher.

Actually, cancel all this because it turns out Henry Cavill is the perfect Mario.

He's a true fan of the franchise

Cavill did this earlier interview where he shares that he has read the books and even replayed the 100+ hour behemoth that is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That's quite a feat! Conspiracy theorists say he knew by the time this interview took place and it's all staged but let's give him the benefit of the doubt (that he actually finished the stuff) because it's not the first time he's flashed some gamer cred...

He missed the call to play Superman because he was raiding in World of Warcraft

We'd like to think Cavill had no reason to falsely claim he was playing WoW at all here—there isn't a huge well-known overlap of WoW fans and Supes fans or anything like that, nor was it a gamer-centric interview where this would have been a crowd-pleaser. Maybe the man just really likes to roleplay! So, this is a big pro because nothing gives fans some faith like knowing the actor about to take on an iconic role is also a gamer at heart.

He's brought hype to the series

Despite people being on the fence about his casting, it's surely a big plus that his acceptance of the role has a lot of people talking about The Witcher. Can you imagine the hype level if they did actually cast an unknown as Geralt? Yup, exactly. Now we can't wait to see who will be playing all of Geralt's ladies...
