Put up a talent show, and you can be sure that people will be lining up. From Eat Bulaga’s "Little Miss Philippines" to Starstruck to the recently-canned Talentadong Pinoy, we’re all suckers for a chance at countrywide fame.

And one of the hottest of the sort right now is ABS-CBN’s The Voice of the Philippines, which puts a spin on the American Idol contest search formula with “blind auditions.” Here’s a rundown, in case you haven’t been tuning in:

The concept puts four judges on their own swivel chair. A contestant belts out a tune, and if a judge likes what they’re hearing, they press a button, and the chair swivels around. The novel implement ensured that the voice will be the sole consideration for judges and not looks nor personality—apt to the show’s title.

From there, the contest moves on to the battle phase, where singers are pitted against each other. One goes home, and one continues. The battles continue until each judge—Black Eyed Peas’ Apl.d.ap, Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, and Bamboo Mañalac—only have six singers each in their respective stables.

Of the 24 still around (you can view the entire list of finalists here) we’ve singled out five contenders that aren’t pro singers, or involved in the music industry in any capacity.

In the final roster, there’s a voice coach (Thor Dulay from Davao), a professional singer (ex-Kulay member Radha Tinsay from Paranaque), and composer (Junji Aranas from Makati) just to name a few. But for every few industry vets, there’s that common tao who you wouldn’t think were capable of concert-level vocals.

Like Nora Aunor, who began her sterling career as a winner in Tawag Ng Tanghalan in 1967, these five individuals are special because these are the types who, up until joining, have been holding concerts in the shower. You know, like all of us, only better. That’s why we can’t help but root for the gals on the next page in the upcoming live performances of The Voice starting tomorrow.
