Let's get straight to the point: Being completely honest with your girlfriend (or wife) is not as easy as it sounds. Sometimes you need to lie to make a relationship work.

Saying "you look good in that dress" when you actually wanted to say "it looks like you are wearing a curtain but we are late and there's no time to do anything about it" is okay.

But don't get used to it. A study published in National Center for Biotechnology Information says: "If you don't have honesty in a relationship, then there is no relationship."

To hit the point home, here are six reasons why honesty is important:

1) She will eventually find out.

You've probably heard about it before: Women do better research than NBI agents. So whatever you did, she will find out sooner or later. That said, it's always best to be open about everything with your significant other. This will keep her from suspecting infidelity and stop her paranoia.

2) It can keep you out of trouble.

You can dig yourself deeper into a hole with lies. So from the start, don't even go there. Keep a clean slate by staying honest with your boo.

3) Without honesty, the trust can't be real.

Trust is one of the core ingredients that keep a relationship secure. If you can't be honest and transparent, she won't be able to trust you, and the relationship falls.

Maika, 27, recently-single, has this to offer: "Honesty is very important because if it's missing in the relationship, you can't trust each other. And if you can't trust each other, you can't even be friends, much less lovers."

"Don't hesitate to be honest with your girl even it's embarrassing. She'll surely admire you more because of your courage to tell her," she adds.

4) Honesty = freedom

Being authentic and saying what you feel and think feels great. By doing so, you break free of the limitations of fear.

Linda, 55, married for 28 years, says: "Be honest and it will set you free and keep your relationship stronger. Whatever happens, there must be open communication with your partner. It's normal to make mistakes."

5) Hearing the painful truth is less painful than being lied to.

You think lying can make your loved one feel better. It might—albeit temporarily. When they do find out, the pain will be harder to bear because now they're not only dealing with the truth. They're also dealing with the truth that they're with a lying asshole.

Lying to cover something up causes people to feel betrayed as well as hurt, and makes them question why you weren't just honest with them in the first place.

6) It's a sign of maturity.

A mature person knows there will be consequences—and they're prepared to face them—but that doesn't stop them from saying the truth. Rather, he mans up and faces whatever might happen.

Even if it means ending the relationship. Man up and face the music, because sooner and later the music will strap its boots on and come directly at you.

"Next to love, honesty is the next important thing in a relationship," says Joi, 27, who has recently gotten out of a relationship after finding out her boyfriend of seven years had impregnated another woman. It is a two-way street, Joi adds, "True honesty will never be achieved with only one person being honest to the other. Both should be committed to be honest to one another in order to make things work."
