So you finally received that event invite you've been anxiously waiting for, your FOMO fears now squashed. You go through all the deets, the social butterfly inside you happily flapping its wings with every entry, and then you read this: Attire: Smart Casual.

Chances are you'll first say, a bit smugly, "Ay, smart casual lang pala, kala ko formal," and then it hits you: "Wait, WTF is smart casual?"

We dissect this fashion term by throwing five questions at it to help you understand what it really requires. Hopefully, this little Q&A will save you from awkward glances from your fellow party peeps.

Going 50 percent smart, 50 percent casual might seem a logical way of doing things, but it’s still loaded with pitfalls. A suit jacket worn with jeans is a perfect option for a job where you’re not required to turn up in a full suit, but it’s probably best not to rock the look for a funeral. If you want to be on the smarter side, go for dark denim as opposed to a cooler distressed pair. And for the record, this look does not work in reverse, wearing suit trousers with a casual top will make you look like you’ve robbed a tiangge.

Yes, but it’s a delicate balance. The key is to pick a contemporary-looking suit and going for the right sneakers. Try and match the suit with toned-down colorways. Navys, greys, and blacks work well, whereas a full white trainer will most likely look tacky. Don’t be afraid to allow a pop of color or a pattern on your kicks either. Sneakers in luxury materials such as soft leather or suede are ideal—no ratty Chucks for this look.
