8 Acne Myths, Busted!

Save your face from these non-truths.
by Mary Rose A. Hogaza | Oct 9, 2015

Waking up with a zit on your face is frustrating. But nothing could be more frustrating than finding the perfect product to zap that zit.

An overwhelming number of products that promise to give you blemish-free skin are available on the market, but up until now you haven’t quite found the one. Out of desperation, you end up holding on to pieces of advice from your folks, like, "Lagyan mo lang yan ng toothpaste, bukas wala na." Or, "Your skin is dirty; just wash it more frequently." Truth is, these treatments can only make your skin condition worse.

In order to truly banish acne, you need to tell the difference between cold hard facts and old wives' tales. Let's get this over with.

1)   MYTH: APPLY TOOTHPASTE ON YOUR PIMPLE TO DRY IT OUT

This dental product can help you magically dry out pimples overnight, thanks to its benzoyl peroxide ingredient. However, it isn't safe for your skin. Toothpaste has the ability to leave your skin scaly and inflamed. Opt for Cetaphil, Celeteque, or Panoxyl instead. These facial products also have benzoyl peroxide and don't contain ingredients that would harm your beloved pogi face.

2)   MYTH: SHAVING CAUSES ZIT BREAKOUT

False. Those growths you see may not be pimples, but ingrown hair. How do you know? Well, you don't. So to avoid irritation altogether, change blades regularly, or make a switch to an electric razor.

3)   MYTH: PIMPLES ARE CAUSED BY DIRT, SO WASH YOUR FACE MORE FREQUENTLY

Actually, over-washing can exacerbate the problem. When you wash too much, you strip your skin of its natural oils. This makes your skin dehydrated, so it overcompensates by producing more oil, which can make breakouts worse. Washing your face twice a day is more than enough to reduce bacteria.

4)   MYTH: IT'S OKAY TO ZAP ZITS

Hands off your mug! Popping your pimple causes trauma to the skin, and can lead to inflammation and infection. We know it's hard to resist popping a particularly ripe pimple, but be very patient. Wait three to five days and it will say ta-ta on its own.

5)   MYTH: JUNK FOOD CAUSES ACNE

Numerous studies have shown that your love affair with French fries, chocolates, and potato chips doesn't have any impact on your skin's health. Rather, too much consumption of greasy food can cause clogged pores—the real culprit behind an acne breakout.

6)   MYTH: THE SUN HELPS TO CLEAR UP PIMPLES

It may feel like it's drying out your skin, but don't get fooled. The sun's UVB rays can "cook" the surface of your skin, destroying your protective layers and, worse, can lead to skin cancer.

7)   MYTH: YOU CAN SWEAT OUT YOUR ACNE

Steaming or exercising doesn't help you get rid of acne. According to Acne.about.com, this can only worsen the condition. We'll tell you what works: Keep it cool.

8)   MYTH: IT'S A TEEN THING

If you thought those pimples would go away together with your stash of Pokemon cards, you are wrong. Adulthood isn't exactly a get-out-of-jail pass for having a pimply face. Genetics, for one, plays a big role.
