How often do you hear the line "new year, new you"? Since it's now kind of grating for the ears, we’re guessing for many of you, a hell of a lot. Welcoming the new year by reinventing yourself is a pretty good idea, so how can you blame the people who use this as their mantra? After all, the new year is like a reset button—it’s your chance to wipe the slate clean and forget about the bad grooming decisions you might have made in 2017.

So if you’re hair game was less than stellar last year, make sure you start off strong this 2018 with a fresh new ‘do. Here are three cool new styles to consider getting on your first barbershop visit of the year.

Technicolor Locks

Who knew frosted tips would make a comeback? Thankfully, the modern version of this '90s trend is less about the bleached spikes and noodle hair, and more about adding flattering hues to an already dapper ‘do.

How to get it:

First, you need to get your hair done in a cut you already like. We suggest you stick with shorter lengths—they’re better suited for the look you’re going for, and easier to maintain to boot! When it comes to the actual coloring part, you can choose to either go for bright highlights, or for full coverage. Either way, be prepared for some bleach application.

How to style it:

If you decided to go for the former and have technicolor streaks in your hair, show them off with a primped and slicked hairstyle of your choice. If you went for the latter and now have an entire headful of colored hair, you can go either way: super sculpted or messy AF.

The Messy Long Crop

Considering how high maintenance the trendy ‘do’s of the last few years have been, it’s no surprise messy, no-care hairstyles are becoming popular again. Sometimes, there’s just no beating the convenience of straight-out-of-bed hair. And this crop is one way to pull off that bed hair look with ease while still keeping the hair situation more or less manageable.

How to get it:

If you’re growing out an undercut, then you technically already have this style in the works. If not, get your hair around good 3-5 inches long on top, with the back and sides tapered neatly. Better to get the hair nearer to your crown clipped shorter, while maintaining a longer fringe in the front.

How to style it:

The beauty of this easy ‘do is that as once you get it cut the right way, it takes little to no styling afterwards—just maybe run a bit of wax through with your fingers to keep it in place. Of course, if your hair isn’t naturally messy, you can just add more product and scrunch up your hair with your hands.

The Banging Bob

If you want grow out your hair, but don’t want to deal with anything growing below your shoulders, a respectable, long-ish haircut is a pushed back bob with a sideswept fringe. This style is especially flattering for gents with thick, wavy hair since the quality of your hair will add natural volume and character to the ‘do.

How to get it:

Ideally, your hair should be around jaw-length, and long enough to reach your nape in the back. Then, have your hair shaped at the barbers—a layered cut will add instant body to your ‘do, though make sure they maintain the length. For the final touch, get a long side-fringe that’s on the same level with your ears.

How to style it:

If you have fluffy hair, this ‘do is easy to achieve. If you don’t, fluff it up with a touch of product while it’s still damp. Once this is done, just brush your hair back, then break up the front to follow your natural part. For extra pogi-points, make sure your bangs are framing your face and aren’t tucked behind your ears. Afterwards, you can apply a bit more product to keep the shape in the back.
