These days it's totally normal to take a selfie when you're out and about because, well, if you don't have a photo, did it really happen? But be careful: taking selfies can harm your skin.
In a column written for the Daily Mail UK, fashion and makeup blogger Mehren Baig shared that she takes around 50 selfies per day for her Instagram and blog. Recently though she started noticing some skin problems such as freckles on her cheeks, enlarged pores, and dark circles under her eyes. She decided to do a little research and found out that smartphones emit high energy visible (HEV) light from screens, which has a negative impact on skin.
She decided to consult with Dr. Simon Zokaie, a cosmetic dermatologist at the Linia Skin Clinic in London, to find out if her findings are true.
He examined her skin and then had her sit under a skin scanner, which analyzes damage on skin. Results show that her skin had been prematurely aging.
Dr. Zokaie explained that there are three major factors that lead to skin aging: pollution, sun damage and HEV light damage. These all cause the skin to become overheated and inflamed, which as a result, causes an overproduction of the free radicals, and this is what causes the damage. A majority of damage caused by HEV light is undetectable to the human eye.
The good news is that you don't have to stop taking selfies. Dr. Zokaie recommends using "a gentle cleanser in the morning followed by anti-oxidant serum in the morning the a sunscreen with SPF 30-50" in the morning.
"In the evening I recommended her to use a salicylic wash. Followed by an night anti-oxidant and a Vitamin A cream," he added.
