Remember the Nike Cortez, that iconic running shoe your parents (or you yourself) used to wear years ago?
Officially released in 1972, the sneaker is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. The classic pair, created by coach and Nike co-founder Bill Bowrerman, was the brand’s first-ever track shoe. It was also Nike’s best-selling shoe during the ‘70s.
Two years after it was launched, a women’s version of the shoe, the Senorita Cortez, hit the market. The features retained the hallmarks of the original, and also became a best-seller in the ladies market.
Overtime the shoe has helped runners, made cameos in movies (Remember Forrest Gump?), and became a wardrobe staple both for men and women alike.
It's safe to say that the Cortez was one of the first Nike pairs to become a pop culture icon. In fact, the shoes are considered as one of the reasons for the success of Nike, Inc.
To celebrate the iconic silhouette's 45th year, Nike will be releasing new colorways this May. And trust us, your girl will want a pair of these killer kicks. They're the perfect anniversary or birthday gift for the love of your life, if she's a Nike-kind-of-girl that is.
