The Binay family-cum-political dynasty finds itself in a difficult situation, as siblings, incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay and Junjun Binay, both expressed their desire to run for the former's position next year.
In an interview with Karen Davila on Headstart, Abby revealed that it has been three years since she last spoke to her brother Junjun, who is also seeking re-election after he had served as city head from 2010 to 2015. Recently, the latter claimed that they talked during his birthday last June.
She explained, "The issue with our family is within our family. Lumalabas lang siya ngayon because now he wants to run against me. We have our own personal differences inside our family pero ngayon napag-uusapan kasi parang ngayon lumalabas dahil gustong maglaban."
Amid the conflict, ex-vice president and Binay patriarch Jejomar said in a statement that he respects his daughter (United Nationalist Alliance) and son's (Una ang Makati) decision to run against each other in the 2019 mayoralty race: "Ang magpapasya niyan ay ang mga mamamayan ng Makati."
The brewing sibling rivalry not only casted doubt on Abby and Junjun's true intentions, but also stirred social media's creativity.
