In keeping with tradition, the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the No. 1 seed Toronto Raptors in the second round of the 2018 NBA playoffs. They're now the first team to advance to the conference finals after being the last to make it past the opening series.
LeBron James (29 pts 11 ast 8 reb) didn't need another game-winner, as he got enough help from "The Other Cavaliers" (Kevin Love 23 pts 6 reb 2 blk, JR Smith 15 pts 6-6 fg 2 stl). Raptors coach Dwane Casey, on the other hand, saw his superstars crumble yet again under the pressure of the postseason, and is facing a murky future with the organization.
What's certain are the memes about the outcome that have spread like wildfire online as the buzzer sounded. It's as if these sports news outlets were prepared for the inevitable, just waiting for the final score to share their social media posts. FHM ranks the best ones in terms of the time and thought put into it, as well as how easily understandable each one is.
P.S. Expect a ton of Drake and Avengers: Infinity War references.
10) Wait, what?
These are the ones that a casual basketball fan won't get at first or even second look, except if you also follow Game of Thrones and Drake's career. Either way, the creativity to come up with cross-topic memes is still impressive.
9) 'I don't feel so good'
The first nod to Infinity War in this list, the movie's ending was as stunning as the end of Toronto's 2017-18 season. Fox Sports may also be alluding to DeMar Derozan (13 points) getting ejected for a flagrant 2 in the third quarter.
8) Playoff Drake
The Raptors global ambassador is basically this postseason's modern-day Spike Lee. He talked smack with the Washington Wizards, which might've worked because his team won the series—not with the Cavs, though.
7) LeBronto in 2K
It's one of the most overused basketball meme formats yet still effective. Those LeBronto 2K uniforms either represent how The King has been owning Casey and co. or him being in video game mode so far in the playoffs.
6) Hotline Bling
This would've ranked higher if the Grammy-winning 2015 hit was actually included instead of just a GIF about sweeping. Nevertheless, the idea of Drake's awkward dance moves haunting him years later is pure internet gold.
Make that the "entire Raptors organization and everyone who said, 'Toronto in 6.'" So much for winning a franchise record 59 wins and claiming the top seed in the East, only to be devoured by a more fearsome predator.
4) Raptors 'could've had it all'
There's a difference between obscure and original, and The Ringer pulled off a masterstroke. Who knew that there was an artist other than Drake who could render the perfect theme song for Toronto's Cleveland woes?
3) Bring out the brooms
The artwork is as simple as it gets, but speaks volumes about the Cavaliers' dominance of the Raptors. We just hope the image won't end up meaning the opposite once they face stronger teams moving forward.
2) Bron's Plan
No bigger shade has been thrown than James handing Derozan and a "Crying Jordan" edit of Kyle Lowry (5 pts) the "L" a la Drake, before grooving with a rejuvenated Kevin Love. These elements make for a quality NBA meme.
Allow us to quote the Avengers: Infinity War villain on this one: "In time, you will know what it's like to lose. To feel so desperately that you're right. Yet to fail all the same. Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives."
