Liza Soberano is currently at the center of controversy over a personal comment about being Filipino.
According to online reports, netizens called out the casting of the upcoming fantasy series Bagani on Twitter, saying "di naman sila Pinoy" while referring to stars Liza and Enrique Gil. This prompted the Filipino-American actress to defend herself and her leading man with the tweet above, which seems to have only made things worse.
The show's creator and headwriter Mark Duane Angos tried to fend off criticism by providing context and narrative in a series of posts. He explained that Bagani is neither "historical" nor set in "precolonial" Philippines, and instead takes place in the fictional world of Sansinukob.
Still, netizens are convinced that Liza is missing the point, raising the issues of whitewashing and colonial mentality in local show business. Although some also agree that the 20-year-old isn't to blame for the misrepresentation, but rather the industry perpetuating a culture.
Others were amused by another part of her controversial remark, particularly Liza professing her love for sinigang. We mean, who doesn't? All we have to do now is ask her if she prefers pork, shrimp, or bangus to go with her soup.
