At 8:32 am, today, 8 February 2011, ex-AFP Chief Angelo Reyes is declared dead at Quirino Memorial Hospital.
Inquirer.net reports he “committed suicide by shooting himself in front of the grave of his mother at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City. He was 65.”
Health Secretary Enrique Ona confirmed in a press conference that Reyes died from a gunshot wound to the heart, and was proclaimed dead on arrival at Quirino.
Of course all these reached Twitter barely an hour after Reyes has expired. On her twitter account, Karen Davila reports that “witness says Angelo Reyes asked his kids to go to the car, then shot himself infront of his mother’s grave at Loyola Memorial Park.”
ANCalerts meanwhile, tweets that “Reyes visited his mother’s tomb at the Loyla Memorial Park at past 7AM. This was where he allegedly shot himself in the chest.”
The former Defense Secretary had been “embroiled in controversy over alleged military corruption” reports gmanews.tv. In the same Inquirer news bit, we learn that Reyes had suffered a mild stroke before the congressional investigation of said military controversy.
“He could not take anymore the smear campaign against his name and his family,” writes Inquirer’s Cynthia Balana. “He would never do anything that would besmirch the name of ‘my good mother.’”
According to the same Inquirer report, “he had a gunshot wound to the heart and an external wound to the back.”
Investigations about his death—and corruption in the military—are still underway.
