If there's one thing we always expect from the annual "Look-at-all-the-niceties-I've-done" speech that is the State of the Nation Address (SONA) aside from the customary fashion show, it's the attack of the monstrous effigies (read: roughly-made representations of an individual) militants make (and subsequently burn) that symbolize their pleas and utter disdain of whoever's sitting inside the Malacañan Palace.
The tradition happens every year, and 2015 is no different. If you paid close attention to the news, you're probably familiar with how these hideous, almost demonic imitations of President Noynoy Aquino spearheaded the demonstrations just as the most powerful man in the land was telling us what's up with our nation.
So, which effigies stood out? We picked out some of the really elaborate and hella scary ones that seem to point out that P-Noy is the devil incarnate (we're pretty sure he isn't).
THIS EFFIGY OF PNOY RIDING A DILAPIDATED MRT TRAIN
Created by the artist group Ugat Lahi, this 15-foot effigy is a giant representation of what the militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan says is an unresolved problem many Pinoys are experiencing on a daily basis. "The apt word is bulok. Ang gobyerno ay parang MRT, bulok at matagal nang dapat pinalitan," says Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. We feel your pain, bros.
THIS EFFIGY OF A (LITERALLY) HORNY PNOY
The party-list Anakbayan calls this repulsive spawn of political creativity as the "Halimaw sa Palasyo," a symbol of the President's evil rule with the support of the US government. Good thing they burned it afterwards; we don't want such a thing to be roaming the streets and scaring the bejesus out of us.
THIS EFFIGY OF THE PRESIDENT INSIDE A TRASH BIN
According to the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), this effigy is an apt representation of the trashy situation our country is in and the continuing downfall our fellow citizens are experiencing under the current administration. "Mariing kinukundina ng Freedom from Debt Coalition, sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang effigy na ibabandera sa huling SONA ng pangulo, ang patuloy na pagdagsa ng produkto ng neoliberal, bulok, korap, at kontra-mamamayang patakaran na simbolo ng tuluy-tuloy na elitistang gobyerno sa Pilipinas," says the group in a statement.
THIS EFFIGY OF A VAMPIRIC P-NOY DOWN SOUTH
Militants in Cagayan de Oro also burned an effigy which showed the President as a blood-sucking vampire, complete with long nails and a black cloak. According to Bayan spokesperson Wildon Barros, it's a symbol of the Aquino administration's cruelty
BONUS: THIS EFFIGY OF THE PRESIDENT AS THE PORK BARREL KING
The most memorable effigies from last year's SONA, it perfectly encapsulated the Pork Barrel King accusations thrown at P-Noy at that time. Created by freelance visual artist Aldrein Silanga, the effigy had a pig's face, a crown, and an arm holding a gun—three elements that supposedly signify the corruption and evil deeds of the President's rule.
