At least 10 inmates, including two Chinese nationals were killed while the jail warden was injured following a grenade explosion in the Parañaque City Jail on Thursday evening.
Eight of the casualties died immediately after the blast while two of them survived and were rushed to a medical facility but died later on, GMA News reported.
Meanwhile, Jail Supt. Gerald Bantag is being treated at the Parañaque Hospital after sustaining wounds to his face and lower body.
According to CNN Philippines, the inmates requested a meeting with Bantag to discuss a possible detention transfer. However, the meeting went south after two to three explosions and some gunshots were heard.
It was not clear how things transpired but initial reports said the inmates were armed with guns, knives, and grenades. This claim was disputed by some jail survivors who said the whole incident was probably made up to have the other inmates killed.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology has yet to issue an official statement.
Authorities for their part are currently investigating the jail which has already been placed under lockdown after the incident.
